This new three-day joinery class is designed for beginners or veterans who would like to further hone their dovetailing skills. It emphasizes dovetails, carcase layout, fitting panels and drawer construction through the building of a timeless Shaker Chest. The chest is a reproduction of a Shaker original used at the Mount Lebanon Community during the first half of the 19th Century. It measures 10 7/8” across by 18 3/8” wide by 10 ½” high. A trapped panel creates a bottom for the chest above the drawer fitted into the right end. We will use sassafras, which is striking, easy to work and durable.

    Skills Learned:

    • Carcase construction
    • Hand cutting of dovetails
    • Laying out asymmetrical dovetails to allow for the drawer
    • Fitting trapped panels in a carcase
    • Drawer construction
    • Drawer support
    • Assembly
    • Fitting hinges for the lid
