Although rag rugs have a rich history in European culture, the Swedes have created some of the most beautiful and practical with the ability to withstand generations of wear. The fun of rag rugs is that as you re-purpose your old duds they will trigger memories of events passed when you wore them with style and grace.

You will weave a rug with 8/3 unbleached linen warp, 26-3/4” wide. The rosepath threading will lend sturdiness to the rug and allow the weaver an array of design options. A beamed, threaded and sleyed Glimäkra counterbalance 4 shaft loom is yours for the course duration. You only need to tie-on, but Susan will share some nifty tricks that will take the frustration out of the task.

Participants need to bring their own weft material (approximately 2-1/2 to 3 pounds) completely washed and pressed. Besides using old clothing, Kona cotton fabric is a nice weight of material that beats compactly into the weft and wears well.

The preparation or cutting of the weft material will be taught during the workshop. We will use rotary cutters and very sharp scissors. If you have these items feel free to bring them to facilitate a steady pace of weaving.

The woven length of your rug will be a maximum of 45” (or 65” if you do not want fringe). Finishing options, once off the loom, will be covered. Options include fringe, weaving in warp ends or sewing fabric to bind the warp ends.

Three days will pass quickly and the various techniques and customs learned will allow you to adorn your home with stunning hand woven rugs.
